Jonangu

Jonangu has been worshipped for more than 1200 years for warding off people’s bad luck and bringing them fortune. People from all over Japan visit this shrine to pray for their traffic, travel, and house-moving safety. Jonangu is also famous for its plum blossoms that reach full bloom in March.

The 5 Popular Spots to Visit

Temizu-ya (Place to purify hands):The ’Kikusui-wakamizu’ spring water that flows out of the bamboo pipes at the Temizu-ya has been told to cure every disease. The water is free to take home.
The Weeping Plum Tree:Famous for its beautiful plum blossoms, Jonangu holds ‘The Weeping Plum and Camellia Festival’ every February and March.
‘The Five Kyoto Shrine Tour’:As the shrine that was responsible for protecting the southern end of the former Japanese capital in Kyoto, Jonangu is selected as one of the five shrines of ‘The Five Kyoto Shrine Tour’.
The Tale of Genji Flour Garden’:This beautiful garden is inspired by The Tale of Genji, a famous Japanese novel written 1000 years ago that depicts the lives of the nobles who worked at the royal court. After having a look around the garden, the shrine maiden will serve you Japanese traditional sweets and a bowl of matcha green tea (Entry to the garden is 800 yen per person).
The Chinowa (Thatch Loop) Ritual for Cars:In the first week of July, Jonangu prepares a giant loop made of thatch for cars to drive through. It is believed that cars that drive through this loop will stay safe from traffic accidents and other troubles until the next year.
