Koto-sha:In front of the main shrine, the deities representing each of the 12 Japanese zodiacs are enshrined in the small shrines. Praying to the deity of your own zodiac may give you special protections and make your wishes come true.
Mitarashi-sha:The stream running under this shrine is believed to purify both the body and the mind.
Hojo-An:This hut is a replica of the 10-foot square hut (Hojo-an) that a famous essayist called Kamo no Chomei lived in to realize his Buddhist ideals.
Tadasu no Mori:The forest surrounding the approach to Shimogamo Shrine is called ‘Tadasu no Mori’. It is a 124,000㎡-size primeval forest, and the large trees are estimated to be hundreds of years old.
Sazare Ishi: ‘Sazare ishi’ means ‘small pebbles’, and it refers to rocks that are made of small pebbles stuck together (a type of conglomerate). Sazare ishi appears in the Japanese national anthem, and is a symbol of unity.
