Kitano Tenmangu Shrine was built in 947, and is the headquarter of the 12,000 Tenmangu and Tenjin shrines in Japan. The main enshrined deity is Sugawara-no-Michizane, one of the most worshipped deity of academics in Japan. The beautiful main sanctuary is designated as a national treasure, and the shrine is also famous for its plum blossom and Japanese maple garden.

Main Sanctuary:On the left and right side of the main sanctuary, which is designated as the national treasure, the sacred pine and plum tree are planted as the symbol of the shrine.Nade Ushi:Cows are said to be the messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane, the main enshrined deity of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. Therefore, statues of cows are placed at every important place in the precinct. It is believed that if you touch the cow statue while making a wish, any illness of the body part of the cow you touched will be cured.Ema-Sho:At the Ema-sho, which is designated as the Kyoto City Designated Tangible Cultural Property, large emas (wooden plaques) of the 36 most distinguished medieval poets are exhibited along with their signature poems.Hana Te Mizu:The temizu-ya (the place where visitors purify their hands) of Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is always decorated beautifully with various flowers of the season.Pickled Plums:At Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, visitors can purchase the pickled plums made from the plums harvested from the sacred plum trees planted in the precinct. The delicate taste of their pickled plums cannot be made from other ordinary plums.

Hirano ShrineHirano Shrine is renowned for its garden with more than 400 cherry blossom trees of approximately 60 varieties. The shrine was built in 794, and also has deep relationship with the Japanese Imperial Family.
